Each year the members of Manchester Roller Derby collectively choose a charity that we want to spend the next 12 months supporting in any way we can. For 2015, we are pleased to announce that we have selected local Manchester charity, Moodswings.
“Moodswings is an award winning Manchester based Charity founded in 1999 to help people recover from mood problems and the severe emotional distress they can cause.
Mood problems can range from periods of severe anxiety or depression to episodes of high and low mood. The effects on education, employment, relationships and family life can be devastating.
The work of the Charity is based on a belief that people can recover from severe mood problems and move on to lead happier and fuller lives. From its centre in Manchester, Moodswings reaches out across the north west and beyond with a message of real hope and optimism for individuals and their families and friends.”
We’ve not wasted any time fundraising for them – you might have seen our buckets out at our 5th Birthday double header in March. Chair of the charity Tom McAlpine came down to meet us and witness his first roller derby game, along with his daughter Jenny McAlpine – better known as Fizz from Coronation Street – who started off celebrations by blowing the first whistle. All proceeds from our ever popular half time Chuck-a-Duck went to Moodswings, along with any other donations that went in to the buckets that day.
If you want to support the good work that Moodswings do, we’ll be collecting for them at all our home games in 2015 – but in the meantime you can head to their own event on Wednesday 25th March with special guest Sarah Millican!
