CheckerBroads, Team Zebra
Number: 619
Position: Blocker and Jam Referee
Skating since: May 2010
Previous leagues: Roller Derby Leicester, All Ireland Roller Derby
Favourite skate gear: I guess I have to say my wigs. They’re there to help me through games, a bit of a security blanket, but also make me happy on game day. Oh, and my phone, to take selfies. Erm, skates are also very useful. Mine are black and white and green, green is my favourite colour.
Best moment so far: I’ve been fortunate enough to attend three World Cups, once as a skater and twice as an announcer. Each one has been amazing for its own reasons!
Origin of derby name: It’s an exclamation of pure terror, fear and joy. Like what I do when I put wheels on my feet.
Any major injuries? Nothing major. Fractured sacrum after tripping over a teammate whilst skating backwards (I got some good air), self-inflicted concussion x 3, the usual sprains and things. Once got a bruise on my face in the shape of a tiny skate, which was cool.
Hobbies/interests outside roller derby: I have grade 8 drums and percussion, grade 7 jazz flute just like Ron Burgundy, grade 1 alto saxophone and grade 2 pole fitness. I like certificates.
