Position: Blocker, Jammer
Started skating: November 2014
Favourite skate gear: I wear 187 Pro Derby knee pads and 187 Pro elbow pads. My wrist guards are SFR dual splints, which I’ve loved since Zero 2 Hero. I have a Triple 8 Brainsaver to protect my noggin, and G-Form Pro-X shin pads to stop those nasty shin bruises.
Skate-wise I’m on Bont Hybrids on SureGrip Avanti aluminium plates.
What’s the origin of your derby name? My name (pronounced “KammyHaa”) comes from ‘Kamehameha’, the first energy attack and most commonly used finishing move in Dragon Ball Z. DBZ is a Japanese anime/cartoon about defending the Earth through epic martial arts that I watched all the time as a kid. On track I’m just Kame, which coincidentally means ‘turtle’ in Japanese. I may not be the fastest skater, but I can be pretty tough!
Have you had any serious injuries? Nothing serious, thank god, but I did end up in A&E once after a fun-and-games Rookies (now Ragers) session. We’d managed to get through a game of roller hockey without any injuries, but during tag-rugby-on-skates I managed to splat the side of Cinderfella’s helmet causing the bridge of my nose to bleed and swell up almost instantly. I went to A&E (thanks Cecil) but by the time I’d waited 2 hours, the swelling had disappeared and the doctor discharged me with a ‘papercut’!
One thing people don’t know about you: I’m a PhD student at UoM and I’m researching the psychology of time perception – how we perceive time, what makes time seem to speed up and slow down, and why this might be.
Check out our new lab website at timelabmanchester.com and hit me up if you want to participate in any psychological experiments!
