Team Zebra
Started skating: November 2012
Position: OPR, FIPR
Favourite skate gear: Fox 40 finger whistle, it’s the love of my life! Clear, loud, handy and you can stash it down your bra, ooh-er!
Your derby hero/heroine: Ska, Ska, Ska! (MRD). I’m not sucking up to the boss, but I love how loud, quick and confident she is, I’m glad she’s my responsible adult (HR).
Career highlight so far: I’ve really enjoyed anything where I get to meet more officials. I’ve been lucky to take part in lots of informal tournaments where you can learn from others. Having said that, I do like a challenge so having the opportunity to officiate closely seeded teams or high-level games is great, even though I spend ages swotting up beforehand.
What’s the origin of your derby name?: R2D2 is my favourite Star Wars character and I like whistles so Artoo became R-Toot.
Toot toot!
Also, people have lots of trouble saying my last name; ‘Mugonyi’ isn’t too user friendly.
Had any serious injuries: I never know that I had 20 degree pronation on both feet until I started skating, this has led to a catalogue of knee, foot, ITB, quad and piriformis problems. After orthotics, lots of strengthening exercises and lots of stretching and pummelling, I’ve pretty much learned to manage it.
Hobbies/interests outside of derby: I love screening films, I spend a lot of my spare time organising a film festival and neighbourhood cinema events. I’m swiftly turning into the old projector lady.
One thing most people don’t know about me: Hey, I’m an open book!
